Having formed the ambition to become a writer, Pope-Hennessy left Oxford without completing his degree and worked as an editorial assistant for the publishers Sheed and Ward. His first book, London Fabric, was published in 1939, and was awarded the Hawthornden Prize. During the Second World War he worked for military intelligence and spent time as a member of the British army staff in Washington DC. After the war Pope-Hennessy worked full time as a writer and established himself as a one of the leading biography writers of his time. He wrote biographies of, amongst others, Monckton Miles (1949), the Earl of Crewe (1955), Anthony Trollope (1971) and Robert Louis Stevenson (1974).
