Michael Rothenstein
(1908-1993), Painter and printmaker; son of Sir William RothensteinSitter in 13 portraits
Artist of 2 portraits
A dynamic figure in the renaissance in British printmaking that took place in the 1950s and 60s, Rothenstein extended the frontiers of printmaking, believing 'you could print from anything that you could coat with ink'. As well as found objects and materials such as wood offcuts and metal debris, he incorporated fresh 20th century imagery into his relief prints, combining photographic material with traditional woodcuts and linocuts.
