Edward Turnour, 6th Earl Winterton
(1883-1962), StatesmanSitter in 17 portraits
A politician who achieved the rare distinction of serving as both Baby of the House and Father of the House at the opposite ends of his career in the House of Commons. He was elected as an MP in 1904 at the age of twenty-one, the youngest MP in the Commons, and he remained in the House for the next forty-seven years. He succeeded to his father's title in 1907 but, as an Irish peer, he was not obliged to relinquish his seat in the Commons. In the First World War Turnour fought in Gallipoli and with T. E. Lawrence in the Hejaz operations that culminated in the fall of Damascus. After the War, he served as Under Secretary of State for India, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and as Paymaster-General.
