President of the Board of Trade 1916-19; Chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board (1933-47), the culmination of a lifetime spent in the gradual unification of London's transport systems. A genial and much liked man, according to his obituary, 'those who played golf with him always enjoyed their round no matter how execrable the play might be.'
