Hugh Cudlipp, Baron Cudlipp(1913-1998), Newspaper editor and writer
Sitter in 10 portraits
One of the greatest newspaper editors of the modern era. At fifteen he worked briefly on a local Cardiff paper, the Penarth News, before moving to the Evening Chronicle in Manchester. He was recruited in 1932 to the Fleet Street-based Sunday Chronicle as features editor at the extremely young age of nineteen. He joined the Daily Mirror group of newspapers as an editor in 1935 where, with two brief gaps, he remained for the rest of his career. He went on to become Editorial Director (1952-63), Chairman of the Daily Mirror Newspapers group (1963-7) and Chairman of the International Publishing Corporation (1968-73). His brother, Percy, was also a prominent journalist.
