Sir Caspar John

(1903-1984), Admiral of the Fleet; son of Augustus John

Sitter in 6 portraits
As the son of Augustus John and his first wife Ida Nettleship (1877-1907), Caspar John had a bohemian and itinerant early childhood. To the surprise of his father, he decided to join the navy and entered naval college aged thirteen. He went on to become Admiral of the Fleet and Vice-Chief of Naval Staff to Mountbatten (1957). A pioneer in the Fleet Air Arm, he was the first naval aviator to rise to the position of First Sea Lord (1960-3).
