Film historian and photo-archivist Kobal was born in Austria, brought up in Canada and moved to England in late 1950s. A passion for collecting film stills and negatives resulted in the creation of the Kobal Collection, an unrivalled archive of cinema photographs. He produced over thirty books including The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers 1925-40 (1980) and an anthology of film star interviews People Will Talk (1986).
