Born in London, Fantoni studied at Camberwell School of Art (1954-8) and following expulsion attended the Slade School of Fine Art. He joined the staff of the magazine Private Eye as a cartoonist and columnist. He also wrote scripts for the BBC's satirical show That Was the Week That Was. In 1966 he hosted the fashion and music programme, A Whole Scene Going On, and for which he was voted Television Personality of the Year. Fantoni produced caricatures for the listings magazine Radio Times from the mid 1960s. He has also achieved success as a poet, playwright and jazz musician.

He was my teacher at Croydon College. He never was still for one second. He was painting a pic of the Beatles at the time. He had finished a pic of Prince Phillip surrounded by paper cut out uniforms. He was very cheerful but self critical , he also didn't seem to understand that not everyone could draw as well as him ! I have a pic of some of his class at Croydon.. ..l was 14 , l think . It was an exciting class in exciting times!
