Teacher, writer and critic and like his wife, Iris Murdoch, an Oxford don. In the mid-1990s it was diagnosed that Iris Murdoch was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. In Iris - A Memoir (1998) and Iris and the Friends (1999) John Bayley wrote moving accounts of her illness and death and of their relationship. A third volume, The Widower's House, was published in March 2001.
