A poet, best known as the subject of In Memoriam A.H.H., a major work by his best friend, Alfred Tennyson. The son of historian Henry Hallam, he was educated at Eton, where he became friends with the future prime minister William Ewart Gladstone. After leaving school he travelled with his parents, spending eight months in Italy. He returned to begin studying at Cambridge University in 1828, where he met Tennyson, both having a group known as the Cambridge Apostles. Their shared interests led to a close friendship, and Arthur became engaged to Tennyson's sister, Emilia Tennyson. While travelling abroad with his father, he died suddenly at Vienna, of a brain haemorrhage.
