John Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley
(circa 1533-1609), Politician and collector of art and booksSitter in 2 portraits
Lumley was both a politician and a collector. He was involved in a failed plot which attempted to re-establish Roman Catholicism in England (known as the Ridofli plot). As a result he was imprisoned from 1569 to 1573. An avid collector of books and paintings, Lumley's library was bought after his death by James I for Henry, Prince of Wales. His magnificent collection of paintings included Holbein's cartoon for the Whitehall mural.
