Jackson made her stage debut in 1957 and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1963. She has appeared in productions including Marat/ Sade (1966), Strange Interlude (1985) and Macbeth (1988). Jackson played Queen Elizabeth I in the TV series Elizabeth R (1971) and her films have included Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), The Return of the Soldier (1983) and A Touch of Class (1973) for which she won the Best Actress award at the Oscars. Jackson was Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate from 1992 to 2010 and for Hampstead and Kilburn from 2010 until her retirement in 2015.
