Physicist, born in Berlin. Wykeham Professor of Physics, Oxford University and Fellow, New College, Oxford (1963-74, now emeritus fellow). Conducted research in Britain relating to the quantum theory and to nuclear physics. Appointed fellow of the Royal Society (1945) and knighted in 1968.
