During his education at Queen's College, Cambridge, Harding became a strong Anglo-Catholic and for a time trained for the priesthood. He was a school teacher, policeman and trained to be a barrister before joining the BBC at the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1944 he went to Canada for three years to work with the BBC's Toronto Office. Harding's first show in broadcasting was Round Britain Quiz. He also presented The Brains Trust and Twenty Questions on radio and became known for his sharp wit and intellect on the television game show What's my Line? (1951-60).
