British author; began career as a porter at Sotheby's, rising to a directorship 1965-66; a full-time writer from 1975, he completed only six books including In Pantagonia (1977), On Black Hill (1982), Songlines (1987) and Utz (1988) before his early death. Chatwin also worked for the Sunday Times Magazine covering art and architecture.
