Richard Brompton trained as a painter in London, working in the studio of Benjamin Wilson. In 1757 travelled to Rome, where he met Charles Compton, 7th Earl of Northampton, who became his patron and protector and who introduced him to the Duke of York. On his return to London in 1765, Brompton set up a portraiture practice. He exhibited regularly between 1767 and 1777 with the Free Society of Artists, the Society of Artists and at the Royal Academy.
