Patrick Branwell Brontë was a painter and poet, the only son of the Brontë family, and the brother of the writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne. In 1838 he set himself up as a professional portrait painter in a studio in Bradford, but failed to make a living for himself. He worked as a tutor and in various other jobs but died of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-one.
