Artist and writer associated with surrealism, automatism, the occult and alchemy. Colquhoun trained at the Slade School of Art and held her first one-woman show in 1936, with works influenced by Salvador Dali. She was expelled from the English Surrealism Group for her passionate attraction to the arcane and the occult. She exhibited internationally, and key works include the painting Scylla (Tate Collection, 1938) and Rivieres Tiedes (Southampton Art Gallery, 1941). In the 1950s and 1960s she wrote experimental topographical essays, novels and poetry.
