Francis Cotes

(1726-1770), Portrait painter

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist associated with 89 portraits
Francis Cotes trained under portrait painter George Knapton and soon afterwards established himself as a highly fashionable painter. He initially concentrated on portraits in pastel and crayon, although he later extended his working practice to include oil painting. He frequently had engravings made after his portraits, which enabled them to reach a far greater public and gain him widespread recognition. By the 1770s he was one of the most fashionable and sought after portrait painters in London. Cotes was among the founding members of the Royal Academy and he went on to become director of the Society of Artists, at whose shows he had exhibited since 1760.
