William Daniell

(1769-1837), Landscape painter and engraver

Artist associated with 288 portraits
William Daniell worked predominantly as a topographical draftsman and engraver in aquatint. His works include Oriental Scenery (1795-1808) - published after a tour of India in 1794 with his uncle, the artist Thomas Daniell. Daniell entered the Royal Academy schools in 1799, where in 1807 he was elected Associate, and in 1822 a full academician. In 1802, Daniell commenced work on translating George Dance's series of half-length portraits of 'eminent characters' into soft ground etching. And in 1814 a number of these were selected for publication in two volumes, with a preface by Dance and a dedication to his patron the connoisseur and art collector Sir George Beaumont (1753-1827).
