Andrew Geddes was a Scottish painter and etcher. After his father's death he went in 1806 to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London, after which he set up as a portrait painter in Edinburgh. He went to Paris in 1814 and was then chiefly based in London. Geddes visited Rome in 1828 and travelled on the Continent, returning early in 1831. He was more successful as an etcher than as a painter in oil or watercolour. Geddes painted and etched copies of Old Masters, of which he had a considerable collection, and was able to adopt different styles of painting appropriate to the period of the picture. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1832.
