Artist of 2 portraits
Bernard Hailstone was a painter. He studied at Goldsmith's College School of Art, under Clive Gardiner, then the Royal Academy Schools, with James Bateman and Walter Westley Russell. During the war Hailstone served with the Auxiliary Fire Services. He recorded some of the scenes he witnessed in the Blitz in a series of paintings. In 1941 the War Artists Advisory Committee commissioned Hailstone to paint civil defence subjects. He supplemented these works with portraits of his colleagues in the fire services and other war workers. After the war Hailstone established a successful practice as a portrait painter.

As an art student I was taught by Bernard Hailstone from 1972 / 76. I also was a stand in sitter for various commissions he was working on up until 1978.
He was an amazing painter and always had a cigarette hanging out the side of he mouth, occasionally the ash would drop onto the pallet which he would quickly mix in with the paint.
Bernard was a very sociable person and a great tutor. I have a painting of his that was painted in an hour as a demonstration it's amazing.

Bernard did portrait sketches of my wife and myself in 1984 or 1985 which we have at home--my daughter has one of the 3 that he did of my wife. He was a delightful person and I still remember the lunch of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs at the Chelsea Arts Club.

I was a portrait model for Bernard Hailstone in 1979 when he was teaching classes in his Chelsea studio. He was a warm and engaging instructor. On one occasion, just for his own amusement, he painted an oil sketch of me which I loved and asked if I could have. He generously gave it to me and I still have it hanging in my home.

I am a Canadian artist who met Bernard Hailstone in 1967 in Calgary, Alberta. In 1971, while living in London, I worked as his studio assistant. He was an extraordinary portrait painter and I was often astonished at the economy of means and the limited palette used by this humble master portrait artist. He was a wonderful person who I remained friends with until his passing and remember him with respect and admiration.
