Born in Manchester, Emmanuel Levy studied in Paris and at the Manchester School of Art, where he met L.S. Lowry, whom he was to later succeed as art master at Manchester University department of architecture. He had six solo exhibitions in Manchester between 1925 and 1963, and lectured at Manchester and Stockport College of Art during the 1950s and 1960s. He also worked for a while as an art critic at the Manchester Evening News.
