Herbert George Ponting

Born in England, Ponting's photographic career began in America in 1900 when he took up stereoscopic photography. He spent a decade travelling around the world fulfilling commissions and by 1910 he had established himself as one of the best travel photographers of the time. In 1910 he departed with Scott on his last ill-fated Polar expedition. Showing considerable bravery whilst working under the most hazardous conditions Ponting produced both on film and in photographs work that was not only technically superb but also of a high aesthetic standard. Through illness, he left the expedition before its tragic end. He devoted the rest of his life to preserving records of the expedition.
