Simeon Solomon was born into a prominent Jewish family in London. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1855, and had his first picture exhibited at the Academy at the age of eighteen. Solomon met Rossetti and became part of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. He was also part of a sketching society with Albert Moore, Henry Holiday and W.B. Richmond. Solomon was arrested for indecent exposure in 1871, after which he became estranged from his social circle. He moved to a workhouse and eventually died of drink.
