Thomas Sully was born in Lincolnshire and with his family emigrated to America when he was nine years old. He studied painting under Gilbert Stuart in Boston before establishing himself as a portrait painter in Philadelphia. Sully's sitters included Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, and in 1837 he travelled to London to paint Queen Victoria.
