She was born in Shrewsbury and her family moved to Wolverhampton where her father was Canal Superintendent. She studied at Wolverhampton School of Art from c.1909 - 12 under Robert Jackson Emerson (1878 -1944) where she met Charles Wheeler (1892 - 1974), a fellow student. They were married in 1919 and Emerson presented them with a double portrait bronze medallion commemorating the event which is now in Wolverhampton Art Gallery Collection together with a gilt bronze portrait bust of her (1934) by Charles Wheeler.
