John Bellany

Born in the Scottish town of Port Seton, Bellany studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of art. His large-scale portraits often include personal symbolism, related to artist and sitter; through painting, Bellany was said to have overcome depression, alcoholism and a liver transplant. A retrospective of Bellany's work was held at the Scottish National Gallery and at the Serpentine Gallery London in 1986. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1991.
