George William Beldam
(1868-1937), ArtistArtist associated with 9 portraits
Beldam was one of the leading early photographers of sports personalities. An excellent golfer and cricketer, he produced books of 'action photographs' (a term he coined) on tennis, golf and jujitsu; his two most famous works were produced with C.B. Fry: Great Batsmen: Their Methods at a Glance (1905) and Great Bowlers and Fielders (1906). The books showed for the first time 'action photographs and actual experience' and could be used as practical manuals, breaking the tradition of a more staid form of posed photography. His photographs also provided the basis for A. Chevalier Taylor's celebrated series of colour lithographs of cricketers in action.
