Painter, printmaker and stage designer, Procktor was born in Dublin and brought up in England. He went to Highgate School before studying under William Coldstream at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1958-62). Procktor quickly became successful as part of the 1960s London art scene with his first solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in 1963 selling out. His social circle included Keith Vaughan, David Hockney and Cecil Beaton. Procktor travelled widely and was prolific in making paintings and graphic work, with an acute sense of colour. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1996.
