Paula Rego was born in Portugal in 1935 and at age seventeen came to England where she studied at the Slade (1952-56). Her narrative figuration depicting psychological dramas found an appreciative audience in the 1980s. Her first solo exhibition was in 1981 at the AIR Gallery, London. Numerous solo exhibitions have followed, including at the Serpentine, 1988, at Marlborough Fine Art, 1994, at the Saatchi Gallery, 1994, and at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, 1998. She was appointed first National Gallery Associated Artist in 1990-1. In 1997 she held a retrospective of her work at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool.
