Alexander Wiseman Macara

(1932-2012), Epidemiologist and teacher of medicine

Born and educated in Scotland, studying medicine at Glasgow University, Macara witnessed at first hand the deprivations of the Glasgow slums and the public health problems of the Dockers and the miners. He undertook further studies at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, receiving a doctorate in public health in 1960. Macara is a Public Health Physician and Former academic (University of Bristol 1963-98). He established the Association of Schools of Public Health in Europe and was a member of the General Medical Council for many years. He was also Chairman of the National Heart Forum, Trustee of Patients' Association and President of the Health Care Ethics Forum.
