John Walton successfully scaled most of the heights of British medicine, as a clinician specialising in neurology, a dean of a medical school, and president of organisations as varied as the BMA and the General Medical Council. After 1989 he has found a new role contributing to debates on educational and ethical issues from his crossbench seat in the House of Commons.
