Musician, composer and singer, best known as an electric bass guitarist, harmonica player and pianist, and was most famous as a member of the 1960s rock band Cream. Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Bruce took up jazz bass in his teens, and won a scholarship studying cello and composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He had his first commercial success in 1966 as a member of the band Manfred Mann. Cream was formed in 1966 by guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker and Bruce, who had worked with them both previously, was recruited as bassist, songwriter and vocalist. The band split after just two years; during that time they had a significant impact on music of the time.
