Sitter in 4 portraits
Botanist and author. In 1759 he published the first fundamental treatise in England advocating the principles of Linnaeus in classifying plants; this treatise included his own Observations on Grasses. Stillingfleet is also noteworthy for his cultural activities as a member of Elizabeth Montagu's blue-stocking circle and as a librettist for oratorios by Handel's successor, John Christopher Smith.
