In the summer of 1964 I visited Lady Vyvyan. I had intended to do an ‘A’ Level project on the Helford Passage. Her comprehensive knowledge dissuaded me and I switched to meteorology (I went on to be a consultant to the MetOffice).
My abiding memory is not her smoking, but her obsession with collecting the gold foil from the packets!
