Michael Francis MacLean was the only son of Sir Francis Maclean, K.C.I.E., Chief Justice of Bengal.
Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, he started in the coal trade with the Bromhill Coal Co. in 1893, and was Managing Director of Broomhill Collieries Ltd. from 1900-1905. Managing Director of the Cannop Coal Co. Ltd., Forest of Dean ; Chairman of United Collieries, 1910-1932. Member of the Coal Advisory Committee and also of the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence.
