The correct forename of this enterprising gent is NEWSON, not Newsom. This is an unusual forename, I admit, but it comes from the family name of Newson's paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Newson. In this regard Newson was arguably better served than his elder brother, Balls Garrett, whose forename was originally their mother's maiden surname. I don't normally rely on Wikipedia (citation below), however Newson Garrett is my great-great-grandfather and I can attest that Wikipedia is correct. You could also check any of the biographies of his daughters, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Millicent Garrett Fawcett.
