Priscilla McLaren(1815-1906), Sister of John Bright; mother of 1st Lord Aberconway
Sitter in 1 portrait
Raised in a Quaker family, political activism and debates about equal rights were daily features of her upbringing. She became a member of the Edinburgh Ladies' Emancipation Society and when this ended, became president of the Edinburgh branch of the National Society of Women's Suffrage. The radical politician John Bright was her brother, who introduced the first women's suffrage bill and her sister was the temperance activist and suffragette Margaret Bright Lucas. The liberal politician Charles McLaren was her son. She became particularly involved in demanding changes to laws regarding women's ownership of property. She passed away shortly after writing a letter of support for suffragettes who had been imprisoned for their militancy.
