Sir Roger Henry Hollis

(1905-1973), Intelligence officer

Sitter in 1 portrait
Hollis began his career with MI5 in 1938, and from 1957 to 1965 he served as the services' Director-General. During his tenure he oversaw the exposure of numerous Soviet spies, including Kim Philby. After retiring from the service, Hollis was suspected of having been a double-agent and was investigated. After his death, information from his interrogations was leaked and the ensuing public outcry forced Margaret Thatcher to announce that he had been officially cleared. Hollis's career came under suspicion again in 1987, when the former MI5 agent Peter Wright published Spycatcher, in which he implied that Hollis had been a Soviet spy.
