Philip Venning, son

27 July 2021, 12:18

As a teenager my late mother Rosemary Venning (nee Mann) worked briefly as an office junior for George Fayer in the mid 1930s. She used to talk of the occasion when Wallis Simpson came to the Mayfair studio. Everyone was sworn to the utmost secrecy. She also recalled Vivien Leigh coming to be photographed, and walking round the studio in bare feet. On one occasion she was sent with proofs to a Duke's house in Belgrave Square and told not to return until he had approved them. The Duke had asked her to come back another day but she refused to leave, waiting much of the day while the butler periodically checked she was alright. Her perseverance paid off as the Duke did eventually make his choice. Possibly as a reward Fayer took two or three portrait photographs of her, which we cherish.

The NPG has photographs of her grandfather Sir (Thomas) Duncombe Mann.
