Novelist; born in East Jarrow, where most of her novels are set; began writing in her 40s, Kate Hannigan (1950) preceding over 50 works, several forming series tracing the fortunes of a single character or family; many have been adapted for television. A 1988 survey showed that a third of all fiction borrowed from public libraries in the UK was by Catherine Cookson.
