Rosamond Nina Lehmann
(1901-1990), NovelistSitter in 24 portraits
Lehmann felt destined to write, 'I never considered anything else a possibility'. Educated at home, which was artistic and literary, her first novel Dusty Answer (1927) drew on her undergraduate experiences at Cambridge. Novels such as The Weather in the Streets (1936) and The Echoing Grove (1953) explore feminine passion and reflect her own relationships. Once defined as 'middle-brow' and dismissed as a writer of 'women's novels', she has been reassessed as an important writer of women's experience and admired for her non-linear narratives and impressionistic style.
