President of the Institute of Physics and Visiting Professor, Oxford University. Burnell was born in Belfast and educated at the University of Cambridge. In 1991 she was appointed Professor of Physics at the Open University, a position she held for ten years. Burnell is most recognised for her contributions to the fields of physics and radio astronomy; she was the first to observe and precisely analyse the pulsars (pulsating radio stars). Burnell was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 until 2004 and was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2007.
