Sarah Lyon (the surname is variously Lyons) but the Palgrave Dictionary of Anglo-Jewish History says Lyon is correct. She allegedly lived between 1703 and 1807. She was born in Ashich, Germany, lived and married in Amsterdam (had one son, Isaac) moved to England and lived in Ipswich, Suffolk. A portrait of her was supposedly painted by John Constable in 1804 which is is the Skirball Cultural Centre Museum, Los Angeles. The engraving is a reverse image of the painting. She was Jewish, and was buried in the Jewish cemetery, Ipswich.

Several years ago an American lady called Judy Wolkovitch contacted me as she was producing a family tree of my maternal grandfather (Neuman Flatau who changed his name to Norman Ansell). She sent me an article that she had written about Sarah Lyon. The article was from "20-Shemot, Volume 13.3". According to a family tree that I have, my grandfather's grandfather Asher Ansell (of Ipswich) who died in 1835 married the granddaughter of Sarah Lyon.
Ansell was my grandfather's mother's maiden name.
