Joe Farman

Geophysicist. Farman began studying the Antarctic atmosphere in 1957, becoming Head of the Stratosphere Section of the British Antarctic Survey in 1976. In May 1985, Farman and his fellow scientists, Brian Gardiner and Jonathan Shanklin, published a report in Nature detailing the depletion of ozone in the air above Antarctica. This discovery of the global impact of emissions from man-made gases led to the creation of the international treaty, the Montreal Protocol (1989). Farman received the Society of Chemical Industry Environment Medal in 2000.
