Durant owned a Hertfordshire brick works. In 1840 he founded St Peter's Church, Arkley, Barnet which stands today and is Grade II listed. Durant died in 1848 and there is a plaque in the church erected by his widow in 1849. He lived at High Canons, Shenley.
