Mrs Hansa Mehta
(1897-1995), Educationist and writer; Vice-Chancellor of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda; daughter of Sir Manubhai MehtaSitter in 5 portraits
Reformist, social activist, educator, independence activist, and writer. She participated in freedom movement activities leading to arrest and spells in prison. She held various different roles in India from 1945-60. As president of All India Women's Conference (1945-6) she proposed a Charter of Women's Rights. She represented India on the Nuclear Sub-Comittee on the status of women in 1946 and served as the Indian delegate on the UN Human Rights Commission (1947-48). She was responsible for changing the language of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from "all men are created equal" to "all human beings".
