Simone Signoret
(1921-1985), ActressSitter in 2 portraits
Actress. Born in Germany to French parents, Signoret was raised in Paris. Unable to obtain an official work permit because her father was Jewish, she worked primarily as an extra during the Nazi occupation of France. Signoret's breakthrough to international stardom came with the British film Room at the Top (1959) which won her numerous awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress. Bown's portrait was taken whilst Signoret was in London staring as 'Lady Macbeth' opposite Alec Guinness at the Royal Court Theatre.
