Alex Katz
(1927-), ArtistArtist of 1 portrait
Alex Katz was born in 1927 in New York City. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School in New York, and the Skowhegan School of Paintings and Sculpture in Maine, between 1946 and 1950. His first solo exhibition took place at the Roko Gallery in New York in 1954. The first retrospective of his work was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York in 1986, and took a tour to Miami in the same year. Although Katz's art grew out of the New York School of abstract expressionism, which he both acknowledged and rejected, he is better known for his large-scale, or 'billboard' paintings, which convey their mood and atmosphere primarily through colour and the broad arrangements of shapes on a flat plane.
